Welcome to the eighth edition of ✨ Sustainability This Week ✨! These are our biweekly blog posts where we bring you sustainable alternatives to everyday products and sustainability initiatives we find meaningful! This week, we’re covering products that are fighting against plastic pollution in our oceans and elsewhere. Remember, we’re bringing you sustainable alternatives without sponsorships or affiliate links. Let’s begin!
StrawExpert Reusable Stainless Steel Straws
Where to buy: Amazon
Price: $7.99 (as of May 2 2023)
The first product we’re covering this week is StrawExpert’s set of reusable stainless steel straws ✨. For $7.99, this product is practically a steal. It comes with 16 (that’s right) reusable straws with silicon tips, as well as 4 cleaning brushes 🫧. With 50,000 ratings on Amazon, this is probably the best set of stainless steel straws on the market. Reusable straws are a great way to make a meaningful impact on our environment, as the world uses over 500 million plastic straws every single day. 500 million. Every. Day 🤯. That amounts to billions of straws floating around our planet’s oceans. By purchasing reusable straws, we can each make a small difference in fighting plastic straw pollution in the oceans 🌊.
CiCiGo Reusable Shopping Bags
Where to buy: Amazon
Price: $8.99 (as of May 2 2023)
The second product for this week’s post is CiCiGo’s reusable shopping bags 🛍️. Reusable shopping bags are a great and affordable way to further minimize your plastic waste and footprint. Being machine washable and easily foldable, these bags are easy to take on the go with you ♻️. Over 500 billion plastic bags are used and thrown away every single year, with an average “working life” of 15 minutes per bag (and a “non-working life” of a thousand years). By switching to reusable bags, you can do your part to abstain from plastic bags and bring a positive change to the environment 🏖️.

The sustainability initiative we’re covering this week is SeaChange’s efforts to remove plastic from the ocean and restore coral reefs 🪸. SeaChange is using technology originally developed to deal with hazardous waste into a “mobile response unit that can permanently eliminate plastic pollution.” They’re currently fundraising for their goal of a proof-of-concept to eliminate up to 15 tons of plastic from the ocean every day 🌊. Their advanced technology practically incinerates plastics, as it breaks down the hydrocarbons at temperatures in the thousands of degrees 🔥. Learn more about SeaChange’s incredible efforts here!
