The third issue of ✨ Sustainability This Week ✨ is here! These are our blog posts where we talk about easily accessible sustainable products, as well as sustainability initiatives we find meaningful! This week, we’re talking about clothing and apparel! You know the drill; no sponsors, no affiliate links. We are highlighting and making accessible to you sustainable alternatives to everyday products. Let’s begin!
Adidas Samba Vegan Shoes
Where to buy: Adidas
Price: $100 USD (as of Feb. 21, 2023)
The first product we’ll be covering is Adidas’ Samba Vegan Shoes 👟. Worn by Hailey Bieber, Emma Chamberlain, Kendall Jenner, etc., these have been one of Adidas’ most popular pairs in recent weeks, and rightfully so. The iconic Samba shoe has been a staple for years, and Adidas recently made a conscious decision to do away with animal-based materials. 20% of pieces used to make the upper are made with minimum 50% recycled content, as part of Adidas’ ambition to end plastic waste ♻️. Not only is it vegan and recycled, it’s also identical to the original, right down to the famous T-toe!
Inditex Sustainability
Where to buy: Inditex
The second part of this blog post isn’t about a specific product, but rather about a brand that’s doing sustainability right. Inditex, parent company of seven brands, including Zara, has put an immense focus on sustainability and doing right by the environment in the clothing industry 👕. This industry is often filled with fast fashion brands that are creating waste and destroying ecosystems. Inditex has several commitments and evidence for their grand plans.
Here’s their timeline ⏳:
2022 / 100% of electricity from renewables
2023 / 100% free of single use plastics for all customers
2023 / 100% more sustainable cotton (organic, BC, and/or recycled cotton)
2023 / 100% sustainable man-made cellulosic fibers from more sustainable sources
2025 / 100% more sustainable linen and recycled polyester
2040 / Inditex reaches Net Zero Emissions 🌱
Through sustainable materials, recycled packaging, phasing-out of plastic, used-clothes programs, and more, Inditex is a leading example in the clothing industry of how sustainability should be done effectively. Learn more about Inditex’s sustainability efforts here!
The LEAF Coalition
Learn more: The LEAF Coalition
The sustainability initiative we’re covering this week is The LEAF Coalition and its forest conservation efforts 🌲. LEAF stands for “Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest finance” - the concept is that corporations and organizations fund the conservation of tropical forests. To date, they have raised over $1.5 billion through supporters such as: Amazon, McKinsey, Nestle, Salesforce, Inditex, and more. They’re even supported by the United States and United Kingdom Governments 🏛️. That’s a big deal! Companies involved are required to cut back on their emissions in hopes to become carbon neutral by 2050 or sooner. Learn more about The LEAF Coalition here.
