NYC CLIMATE WEEK & UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Welcome to the fourteenth edition of Climate Now! Our biweekly blog posts where we discuss meaningful and ongoing sustainability initiatives and climate activities. This week we are going to highlight the various climate events taking place in NYC this week! Let's get into it!

These past few weeks have been especially busy for the average climate caring person in New York City! With September 17th marking the start of NYC Climate Week, there have been an array of virtual and in person events taking place across the city to spread awareness and information about the climate crisis.

New York City’s Climate Week events cover a range of topics such as international climate finance, decarbonization, corporate investment, and global clean energy. Speakers include researchers, key political figures, and CEOs who are dedicated to the climate crisis. Access the link to register for these events here! Don't miss out!

In addition to Climate Week, the UN General Assembly is in session this week at the UN Headquarters in NYC! Every year the President of the GA selects a theme for the session. This year the theme is even more relevant to us. Titled “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all,” this meeting has a sharp focus on global sustainability efforts.

This year's meeting includes the Climate Ambition Summit taking place on September 20th. With the goal of increasing the sense of urgency and pace at which we deal with the crisis, the Climate Ambition Summit will be covering a range of crucial topics. The first session of the summit will be focusing on the importance of maintaining the credibility of those who claim to promote and enforce net zero policies. As more and more global and national actors are incentivized to align with climate focused goals, the concern of greenwashing has grown. This session will bring in and highlight first hand accounts of businesses and cities who have been able to implement these goals and in a credible way. The Ambition Summit will also address early warning signaling for vulnerable countries, decarbonization, and the issue of large scale battery storage for the implementation of renewable energy.

You can watch the summit live here by clicking on the specific topics underlined on the UN website and learn more about the various issues relating to climate change in the outline listed at the bottom of the page. To tune into other important summits taking place during this session see the session homepage.

Both Climate week, which is run in coordination with the UN General Assembly, and the Assembly’s summits themselves, are a great way to learn more about the climate crisis from those at the forefront of the issues. Make sure to check out the links out and share it with your friends!
